Russia's Ruble Plunges to Historical Low Over Ukraine Tensions

The Russian currency weakened Friday to its lowest level against the U.S. dollar since records began as evidence mounted of direct Russian military involvement in an escalating conflict in Ukraine. The value of the ruble dropped sharply after trading opened in Moscow and by 10:27 a.m. a dollar was worth 37.01 rubles — passing the 37-ruble mark for the first time ever.

The currency later reversed initial losses and was trading around 36.9 rubles by midday, according to data from The Moscow Exchange.

Millions of historic images posted to Flickr

An American academic is creating a searchable database of 12 million historic copyright-free images. Kalev Leetaru has already uploaded 2.6 million pictures to Flickr, which are searchable thanks to tags that have been automatically added. The photos and drawings are sourced from more than 600 million library book pages scanned in by the Internet Archive organisation. The images have been difficult to access until now. Mr Leetaru said digitisation projects had so far focused on words and ignored pictures.

UK-based company Malloy Aeronautics has developed a new type of helicopter which they call a quadcopter. They have already manufactured a model, one third the size of a real one, and this is already popular with drone enthusiasts. But the team behind it say that this is only the beginning. They are confident that soon they’ll be able to test a real, full-sized one, controlled by a human rider. And they say the quadcopter is safer than a conventional helicopter.

Dancers compete for world tango prize

At the World Tango Championships in Buenos Aires, 648 couples from 41 different countries competed for the World Cup in two categories: salon tango which has strict rules about the steps, and stage tango which allows a more liberal interpretation. Manuela Rossi and Juan Malizia Gatti, a won the stage tango category. She said it was because of their traditional routine: “It was about highlighting the role of the man and the woman, the femininity and sensuality, the man and his solid posture, a very traditional tango choreography.” Twin brothers Nicolas and German Filipeli, were the first same sex couple to reach the final in the stage category.

Despite a revival of Cold War tensions, the Russian government formally advised its citizens to watch a Hollywood sci-fi classic.

"Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope" made the list of officially recognized "foreign classics" by the Culture Ministry. Episode IV was the only only one of the six feature films in the Star Wars canon to make the cut. The list comprises 100 films the ministry formally recommends to Russian citizens, which makes it a rough analogue of the U.S. National Film Registry.

GLI SCIENZIATI dell'Onu hanno sintetizzato l'ultimo affinamento del livello di allarme climatico in un rapporto di 127 pagine inviato ai governi. E tutte le agenzie delle Nazioni Unite in queste ore stanno rilanciando il messaggio fornendo un quadro completo del rischio sanitario, economico, sociale e ambientale. Le probabilità di un impatto del caos climatico "severo, pervasivo e irreversibile" vengono quotate in forte crescita dall'Ipcc. L'Organizzazione meteorologica mondiale ricorda che gli ultimi 13 anni sono nella lista dei 14 più caldi dalla fine dell'Ottocento. E l'Organizzazione mondiale per la salute, per bocca del suo direttore Margaret Chan, definisce schiaccianti le prove della minaccia: "Il cambiamento climatico mette in pericolo la salute umana. Le soluzioni esistono e dobbiamo agire con decisione per cambiare la traiettoria del mutamento in corso".
